Retirement Planning

It is evident, that those who plan for retirement, are more likely to enjoy a retirement lifestyle based on their own terms and not those of someone else. Results also show that obtaining professional help during the pre-retirement years further improves the probability of attaining your retirement objectives.

The earlier this is put in place, the better.

During one’s working life most time is spent at work, raising children and paying off a mortgage. There is always an employment income to make ends meet.

Retirement planning is about the lifestyle you will have after you stop working and it focuses on issues such as how much superannuation is enough, when can I retire, taking a superannuation pension, how long will my money last, claiming the Age Pension, estate planning and looking after your family.

Also, with increasing life expectancy, rising costs and, often, debt still to be cleared, retirement planning becomes even more important. Portfolio Professionals can help you start planning for your retirement today.

Wealth Protection

Everybody’s circumstances are different, but insurance is important for everybody. Your need for insurance will change as you move through the different stages of your life.

Personal insurance provides protection against sickness, injury and death, and includes:

  • Life insurance.
  • Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) insurance.
  • Trauma insurance.
  • Income protection.

While insurance doesn’t remove the risk of something going wrong, it provides you and your family with protection and financial security if something does happen.

The amount of insurance you need is affected by:

  • How much you earn.
  • Your cost of living.
  • Your assets.
  • Your liabilities.
  • Your relationship status (whether you are married, in a de facto relationship or single).
  • How many dependants you have.

We understand that it can be difficult determining the type and level of cover you might need, let alone choosing an insurer. Portfolio Professionals can assist by helping you determine your needs and recommend an insurer that is right for you. We also recommend reviewing your policy at least every 12 months, your personal circumstances change, your policy should reflect those changes, also Insurance providers continue to develop their products and pricing, making reviewing your Wealth Protection Plan very important.

Aged Care & Centrelink Advice

Social Security assistance is provided by various Australian Government Departments including Centrelink and the Department of Veteran Affairs. At Portfolio Professionals, we understand that Centrelink plays an important role for individuals and families when it comes to planning.

Payments such as the Age Pension and Disability Support Pension provide long-term financial support whilst Newstart Allowance provides assistance for a shorter period of time to people who are out of work. Other payments such as Family Tax Benefit, Parts A & B assist with the cost of raising children.

As well as the payment of benefits you may be entitled to access certain additional benefits. For example, if you are of Age Pension age and/or are receiving the Age Pension you may be entitled to concession cards such as the Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or the State Seniors Card which offer concessions, benefits and discounts. The Department of Veteran’s Affairs also provides similar benefits.

Our Centrelink advisory services provide you with strategies and advice to ensure you:

  • Maximise Centrelink benefits, such as the Aged Pension.
  • Gain entitlement for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or Low Income Health Care Card.
  • Gain entitlement for the Pensioner Concession Card.
  • Receive family entitlement planning, incorporating Family Tax Benefits, Paid Parental Leave, and/or the Baby Bonus.

Estate Planning & Asset Protection Strategies

Your estate is made up of everything you own. This includes your home, property, furniture, car, personal possessions, business, investments and bank accounts. Firstly, having a legally valid Will is extremely important, as dying without one it is called 'dying intestate'. This can be costly and create added stress for loved ones at an already difficult time.

You may think that having a current Will outlines what will happen to your estate should you die or become unable to manage your affairs. Unfortunately, for those with more complex financial structures this may not be the case.

To make sure your affairs are in order an Estate Plan will:

  • Provide for and protect loved ones with specific needs, including children.
  • Ensure your children’s inheritance receives increased protection if a relationship breaks down.
  • Ensure you receive professional advice on how to structure your assets to gain available tax advantages.
  • Ensure your wishes are recorded in legally binding documents including your Will, free from ambiguity.
  • Provide you with peace of mind knowing, should you die or be unable to legally manage your affairs, that they will be managed by someone you trust.
  • Ensure non-estate assets such as jointly held assets, family trusts, super fund accounts and private companies are also documented as it may not be possible to deal with them in your Will.

Let Portfolio Professionals guide you through this difficult, but crucial process.

Service 8

You’ve dedicated years to building a successful business with the potential to create significant wealth for you and your family, now and in the future. But it takes careful planning to make the most of that potential and unlock the value you’ve worked so hard to create.

At Portfolio Professionals, we can help you invest the income that your business produces now, and plan ahead to maximise value in the future.

Here are some of the ways we can help you realise its potential:

Business structures
The business structure you choose determines how you can distribute profits to partners and family members, how much tax you pay, and your level of personal exposure to debts and other business liabilities. It also determines your options when you want to leave your business and transfer ownership to a new team. We can help you identify and create the optimal business structure, with a holistic plan for your business and personal finances.

Business succession planning
When the time comes to leave your business, it takes careful planning to maximise the value of your investment and ensure a smooth transition. You also need to consider how you would fund a buyout if you or a business partner needed to leave the business unexpectedly due to ill health or even death. We can help you establish a robust and well-funded succession plan for today, then explore paths for unlocking wealth in the future — from a private equity investment to an Initial Public Offering.

Key person insurance
Without the unique skills that your business partners and key employees bring to the table, you could struggle to maintain revenues, meet overheads and cover business debts. Key person insurance can provide vital protection for you and your business, as well as providing funds for a buyout if you or a partner becomes incapacitated or dies unexpectedly.

Asset protection insurance
Asset protection can provide your business with enough cash to preserve its asset base so it can repay debts, free up cash flow and maintain its credit standing if a business owner or loan guarantor dies or becomes disabled. It can also release personal guarantees secured by the business owner’s assets.

Revenue protection insurance
Revenue protection can provide your business with cash to compensate for the loss of revenue and costs of replacing a key employee or business owner should they die or become disabled.

Ownership protection
This can provide the continuing owners, or their nominees, with sufficient cash for the transfer of the outgoing owner’s equity to the continuing owners, should a business owner die, become disabled, or suffer a critical illness.

Employee super and advice

Without expert support, managing employee super can be both time-consuming and expensive, distracting key administrative staff from core business activities. We can take care of the complexities of employee super administration, helping you reduce administrative overheads and focus on the tasks that really matter.

By engaging us as your employee super partner, your staff will also enjoy the benefit of authoritative financial advice, including seminars, resources and personalised advice designed to help them prepare for a secure retirement. This provides a valuable employee incentive to help you attract and retain highly qualified staff.

A personalised financial plan

Every client is unique, so we begin by exploring your lifestyle aspirations in detail, helping you to create concrete and measurable objectives to act as the centrepiece of your plan. We’ll also clearly outline our services and our fees, so you’ll know upfront what our advice will cost and what you’ll receive in return.

2. Strategy
Once we know where you want to be in life, we’ll develop a strategy designed to help you get there. First, we’ll review your existing investments to ensure they support your goals, identifying any gaps and emerging risks that could impact performance. Then we’ll create an ongoing strategy to maximise your financial potential and protect the lifestyle you have worked so hard to build. We’ll document our suggested approach in a detailed Statement of Advice, setting out your investment, superannuation and wealth protection options, and bringing your financial strategy to life.

3. Implementation
When you’re happy with your financial plan, we can help you execute it, building and managing your portfolio of wealth creation and protection solutions. In doing so, we work in close collaboration with you and other professional advisers, like your accountant, to achieve the best possible outcomes.

4. Review
We’ll meet with you regularly to advise you on your progress and keep you informed about new opportunities, emerging risks and regulatory changes. So you can relax and enjoy life, confident that your financial future is in good hands.
